Obituary for Richard E Burton

Richard E Burton
AUBURN – Richard E. “Dick” Burton, longtime Auburn resident, died peacefully on Thursday, January 31, 2019 surrounded by his family at the age of 78. He was the beloved husband of 56 years of Barbara (Bombard) Burton.

Born in Worcester, the only child of the late Edward E. and Helen M. (Hardy) Burton, Dick graduated from South High School, class of 1958. It was in his teens that he first met Barbara as she was leaving church one Sunday and in 1962, they were married. Six years later, they settled in Auburn where they remained and raised their family.

For more than 50 years, Dick was a parishioner at St. Joseph’s Church in Auburn and soon became very active in his church community. Upon his retirement from his position as Vice President of People’s Savings Bank, Dick went to work at St. Joseph’s Church, helping in many areas, but most noted was his service with the Finance Committee. Throughout his career, Dick never forgot his humble beginnings as a young man with his first job as a local milk man.

An Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, past Grand Knight of Council 13637 in Auburn and past Faithful Navigator of the John Cardinal Wright Assembly, Dick truly enjoyed devoting time to the fraternity helping those in need. He was as a member of the Board for the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Worcester, serving the homeless in the area.

Those who knew Dick will undoubtedly remember him for his many acts of kindness, support and friendliness. Despite the many people whose lives he touched, Dick will be most remembered as a family man who was always there to meet their needs and enjoy time together, especially during the Holidays.

In addition to his wife Barbara, Dick is survived by his children Ann-Marie Cochran and her husband John of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Donna Keable and her husband Tom of Fort Worth, Texas, Brian Burton and his wife Heidi of Gurnee, Illinois, Kevin Burton and his wife Laurie of Dayton, Maine; grandchildren Preston, Brittany, Alexis, Haley, Nick, Spencer, Jack and his step-grandson Daniel. He is also survived by one sister-in-law Kathy Farrell and her husband Bill.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Dick’s family between the hours of 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph Church, 189 Oxford Street North, Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Auburn.
