Obituary for Richard E "Dick" Steelman
Richard E. “Dick” Steelman, 88, longtime Auburn resident died Thursday January 31, 2019 in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Dick was born in Worcester and raised in Auburn son of the late Phillip E. Steelman and Mabel (Cedar) Steelman. He graduated from Auburn High School and then entered into the United States Navy where he served his country proudly during the Korean War aboard the USS Stephen Potter as a radar technician.
Dick worked for the New England Telephone Company as an Installer for many years before he retired.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Auburn; the Joel H. Prouty Masonic Lodge; the Auburn Lodge of Elks; the National Association of the Tin Can Sailors and he was a car enthusiast. Dick also enjoyed being a part of the Auburn Historical Society and spent many hours woodworking, making several birdhouses and other crafts.
Dick was predeceased by his beloved wife Frances L. (Earley) Steelman in 2008. He is survived by his loving children, Linda S. Kusy and her husband Ted of Auburn, Steven Steelman of Florida and David Steelman and his wife Debbie of Charlton; also survived by six grandchildren, Jason Kusy, Todd Kusy, Janna Gero, Alysha, Ashley and Keith Steelman and six great grandchildren. Besides his wife he was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Giddings.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Dick’s family on Thursday February 7, 2019 from 11:00-12:30pm in the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central St., Auburn follow by a funeral service celebrating his life at 1:00 pm at the First Congregational Church, 128 Central Street, Auburn. Burial with military honors will take place next to his wife in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. Flowers may be sent or memorial donations may be made to the Auburn Historical Museum, 41 South Street, Auburn, Ma 01501.
