Obituary for Frances M "Peg" Gwyther (Boyce)

Frances M "Peg" Gwyther (Boyce)
Frances Marguerite "Peg" Gwyther, 94, of Auburn, died peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2019. She was the wife of the late Richard G. "Dick" Gwyther.

Born in Worcester, the daughter of the late Frederick L. and Ellen A. (Harding) Boyce, Peg was raised and educated in Auburn, graduating from Auburn High School in 1942 where she served on the student council. Peg enjoyed a career working as a secretary at the Pakachoag Elementary School and the Auburn School Department office for some 25 years. A founding member of the North American Martyrs Church, after retirement, Peg worked part-time for 10 years in the Parish Office.

Peg reconnected with Dick Gwyther, with whom she had attended Auburn High School, after his return from service in the United States Navy. They were married in 1948 and built their home on Jerome Avenue in Auburn where they raised their family. They shared 32, although far too short, wonderful years together.

Peg was a big fan of the Auburn High School football team (especially when her sons were playing!) and rooted for the New England Patriots. She treasured her large extended family and dearly loved each of her 7 grandchildren, supporting them in all of their educational and athletic pursuits. She also cherished her Irish heritage and enjoyed a visit to Ireland to explore her family roots.

While not at work, Peg loved being surrounded by her family and friends. She will be remembered as a genuinely kind, cheerful and social person who was most happy when in the presence of those she knew, especially during those most memorable social gatherings around the pool and gardens in her backyard.

Peg is survived by her sons, Paul Gwyther and Rae of Cape Coral, Florida, John Gwyther and Ann of Rutland, Michael Gwyther and Fran of Arvada, Colorado; grandchildren, Stephanie Stewart and partner Antoine, Andrew Gwyther and partner Jeffrey, Lindsay Gwyther and partner Gil, Tracy Hookway and partner Stephen, Phil Gwyther and partner Rachel, Kaitlyn Driscoll and partner Mark, Patrick Gwyther; great-grandsons, Connor Stewart, Callum Driscoll, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Peg was predeceased by her beloved siblings James B.F. Boyce, Eileen Boyce, Mary Burke and Kathleen Prendergast.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Peg's family between the hours of 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at the BRITTON-WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn. Her funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM on Friday at North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peg's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at https://act.alz.org/ or the North American Martyrs Church, 7 Wyoma Drive, Auburn, MA 01501.
