Obituary for Patricia Ann Kopka (Sherry)
Patricia A. (Sherry) Kopka, 80, passed away at the Life Care Center in Auburn on Thursday June 20, 2019 a brief illness.
She was born in Worcester to the late George E. Sherry and Catherine V. (Kennedy) Sherry.
She leaves her husband of fifty-three years Martin “Chick” Kopka of Auburn, her son Patrick Kopka and his wife Nancy and their children, Jack and Nick, of West Hartford, CT, her sister Catherine “Kay” Malkasian and her husband Paul of Winter Haven, FL and her brother George “Gige” Sherry and his wife Judy of Porter, ME. She also leaves many brother’s and sister’s in law, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews.
She grew up in Worcester but moved to Auburn in 1953 where her late father George E. Sherry was Athletic Director at the high school. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1956 and from Worcester State Teacher’s College in 1960. She taught at Randall School in Auburn for eight years and was a substitute in the Auburn school system for nearly twenty years. Later, she spent over a decade teaching ESL for Worcester Public Schools, a job she loved and took great
pride in doing.
Pat, or “Doll” as she was called by her family, was an avid sports fan. She dreamed of being a sportswriter as a teenager. She followed the Red Sox religiously. But the true love of her sporting life was Auburn High School sports. She attended nearly all the school’s games with her husband “Chick” and was a fixture at AHS Football Games for over 65 years. Since 1953, she missed less than a handful of games and could always be heard in the bleachers cheering on her Dandies/Rockets.
She was a great lover of maps, atlases and route planning. She was the personal family Google Maps for anyone lost or stuck in traffic, and loved receiving calls from friends and family mid-trip. She enjoyed travelling to new places and loved her dozens of trips to visit her son and daughter-in-law in Los Angeles in the 1990’s.
In her later years, she loved spending time with her grandchildren, Jack and Nick. They were the apples of her eye. She was a selfless person, who spent her life serving others. She loved visiting churches and lit candles and said prayers in hundreds of them. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Her life will be celebrated with a Memorial Mass at North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn on Monday, June 24th, 2019 at 11:00 am. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Auburn High School Athletic Department, 99 Auburn Street, Auburn.
