Obituary for Frederick J. "Fred" Delaney

Frederick J. “Fred” Delaney, 86, passed away on Wednesday November 6, 2019, surrounded by his family at Beaumont Worcester, after a period of declining health.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Phyllis M. (Kelley) Delaney; their three children, Beth Dunn and her husband Ray, Timothy Delaney and his wife Jeanne, and Patricia Cook and her husband Doug, all of Shrewsbury; ten grandchildren, Kate, Meaghan, and Sarah Dunn, Justin, Courtney, Kelly, Jaclyn, and Conor Delaney, Allyson and Caroline Cook; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother William X. Delaney, sisters Jeanne M. Clancy, Catherine ‘Kay’ Horack, Barbara Whitmer.

Born in Cambridge, son of William T. and Margaret F. (Haverty) Delaney, Fred was raised in Belmont, where he graduated from Belmont High School in 1951. He attended Northeastern University before joining the U.S. Army and being stationed in Germany.

While working on Cape Cod one summer, Fred met the “love of his life,” Phyllis Kelley of Worcester. They married the following year and settled in Worcester, where they lived for many years raising their family before moving to Shrewsbury over twenty years ago.

Fred retired from General Motors Corp. in Framingham, where he had worked as a Reliability Engineer for thirty years. For many years, he enjoyed playing golf at Cyprian Keyes with his close friends, Fran, Dick, and Barney.

He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and all their activities throughout the years. He was an avid Boston sports fan, always rooting for his New England teams, the Red Sox, Patriots, and the Bruins. He especially loved watching the Masters Golf Tournament on TV each year.

While in Worcester, Fred was an active member at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, where he was a lector and member of the Parish Council.

Fred was a lovingly devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was always smiling, outgoing, friendly, and well-liked by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank the staff on the second floor of Beaumont Worcester, who showed great compassion in caring for Fred for the past two years, as well as the staff of 6 ICU at UMMHC – University Campus and Salmon Hospice for their recent care of Fred.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family between 4:00 and 6:00 PM on Monday November 11, 2019 at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury, MA. Fred’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday November 12, 2019 at St. Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury, MA. Burial will be held privately.
