Obituary for James W Goodwin

James W Goodwin
James W. “Jim” Goodwin, a longtime Shrewsbury resident, died peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2019 with his family at his side. He was the husband of Sandra (Battaglia) Goodwin.

Born in Boston, son of the late Harold J. and Mary E. (Dillon) Goodwin, Jim was raised and educated in Framingham, graduating from Framingham High School in 1959. For many years, Jim served his community as a real estate agent and taught realty classes. He took great pride in teaching and assisting students across the region in earning their licenses to sell homes. Most recently, he started and ended his day as a crossing guard helping students of Shrewsbury’s Patton Elementary and St. Mary’s Schools. He will miss the students dearly.

To say that Jim was a car enthusiast would be an understatement, as the only thing that Jim loved more than his 1970 Chevelle Malibu was God and his family. Jim spent many years enjoying his car, proudly showing it at local parades, shows and events. Jim was a member of several local car clubs and spent several joyous years residing as the president and founder of the New England Chevelle and El Camino Association.

A third-degree member of the Shrewsbury Knights of Columbus, Adelphi Council #4181, Jim served as past Grand Knight and was still involved with the local council. He especially devoted much of his time for Special Needs Children through the Knight of Columbus and was also a big supported and organizer with the Council’s Tootsie Roll Drive.

In addition to his wife Sandra with whom he enjoyed 55 wonderful years in marriage, Jim is survived by his beloved children Michael J. Goodwin and his wife Heather of Linwood, Kenneth W. Goodwin and his wife Megan of West Boylston, Christopher W. Goodwin and his wife Patricia of Worcester, Michelle Goodwin of Oxford; grandchildren Courtney, Angela, and Cameron Goodwin of whom he was so proud; brother Harold Goodwin and his wife Carol of Shrewsbury; as well as several nieces, and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his dog Bonnie who was his dear companion and sidekick.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jim’s family on Thursday, May 2, 2019 between the hours of 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM at the BRITTON-SHREWSBURY FUNERAL HOME, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Members of the Shrewsbury Knight of Columbus, Adelphi Council #4181 will hold a Memorial Service at 6:16 PM on Thursday in the Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday at St. Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Sterling Animal Shelter, 17 Laurelwood Road, Sterling, MA 01564.
